What to Expect at Your First Counseling Appointment
You're not alone if you feel nervous before your first counseling appointment. Many people feel apprehensive about opening up to a therapist or about setting up an appointment with a therapist for their child. Seeing a therapist doesn't mean that there's something wrong with you or your child—it simply means that mental health is a priority. If there is an issue of concern, we'll address it together and develop a plan for you or your child to move forward.
When you come into the office for your first appointment, we'll ask you to fill out forms to help us learn more about your mental and physical health history. We'll also ask if you have any specific concerns you'd like to address during your sessions.
Usually, our first session together will serve as an intake appointment. Your therapist will ask you many questions to learn more about you and understand your unique needs. There's no need to feel embarrassed or ashamed about your answers—the more honest you are during your intake appointment, the better we'll develop a plan that helps you thrive.
After we finish the intake process, we'll talk with you about a treatment plan for the future. If you decide that you'd like to move forward with treatment, we'll set up an appointment for your first mental health therapy session in Clearwater or Tampa, FL.
